My Interpretation

My interpretation of "mobile and instant society" is: We can all stay connected anytime anywhere with our handheld devices such as smartphones, laptops, i-pads, etc. We can all know what is going on in everyone's lives instantly with Facebook updates and Twitter. And with Mobile Web and devices such as Blackberries, people can update their "status" from virtually anywhere. There is convenience to this, but there is also a downside. There once was downtime. Time when you weren't at work, time when you weren't aware of what was happening miles away, and you weren't expected to know everyone's business all the time. We are losing that, but at the same time gaining the ability to communicate in a new and exciting way. Good, or Bad? What do you think?

Discussion Question

What are some benefits of our mobile and instant society? What do you like about always being in touch?

  1. I do like being able to get in touch with my children at any time. I have also found it a comfort that my parents who are now 90 and 86 have a cell phone with them. They live in the countryside of Maine and I often worry about them traveling those back roads. Now with a cell phone I feel if something happens they can be in touch quickly. I don't like that my kids text all day long sometimes to say just one word at a time. Is that really necessary? Joann

  2. I agree with Joann, having a cellphone has definitely given relief to parents and family members knowing that they are just a phone call away.
I also like texting. I only started texting a year ago, but I find it really helpful when I have a quick question and don't really feel the need to have a conversation.
Although I do love my cellphone and computer, I know sometimes that I just need to turn it off and take a break. I do enjoy some quiet time!

  4. I would really like some downtime. I can't remember when that happened last. That is maybe why so many of us feel frazzled at the end of a day. We use to feel like this at the end of the week. Yet, I love the fact that everytime my daughter has had a car accident (3) she immediately contacted me and wherever I was we were there within a decent amount of time to come to her aid. Or I can talk to her anytime away at school. Technology is wonderful, but I do love to relax once in awhile.

  5. I think as long as you can control the amount of time you spend "staying connected" its a good thing. I do know several people who can't go an hour without checking their Facebook account to see if they have any new comments on their wall. I'll admit it, I'm slowly being pulled into that need to check my Facebook account frequently. It's addictive!

  6. You're right Paul, Facebook definitely is addictive. Now, someone asked how many characters you can type in here so I am going to keep typing to see if I can keep going. In my old blogs there was no limit on how much you could type.

God I hate typing on a laptop. I am constantly messing up and having to delete. Which reminds me that I learned to type on an electric typewriter. Does anyone remember those? I even had a manual typewriter as a kid, which had been my grandfather's. That thing was cool, but you really needed to hit the keys. You needed strong fingers to type. Now let's see, am I running out of space?

Well, it seems like I can keep on going and going, so I don't know the answer to the question. Am I up to 500 characters yet?

    ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Doesn't seem to have a limit...

Ok, now I'll go respond to the post on the blackboard...
